Mapperley Scrabble Club

Mapperley Scrabble Club was founded over 30 years ago. It is currently the largest club in Nottinghamshire with around 30 members. While most members live in or near Nottingham, some travel from as far afield as Derby and Melton Mowbray. New players are always welcome, whatever their level of play.

Meetings are every Thursday evening of the year, except for a one or two week break at Christmas.Doors open at 6.30pm and members are asked to be at the club by 6.45pm if possible.  To be sure of being included in the games for the evening, you must arrive by 6.50pm at the absolute latest.

Three games are played, the first starting at 7.00pm and games 2 and 3 starting no later than 7.55pm and 8.50pm respectively.  Most people find they have finished their third game by 9.30pm but you should allow for the final game lasting up to 9.45pm.

Haywood Road Preschool

Haywood Road Preschool has been running successfully at Haywood Road Community Centre for over 30 years.

It provides high quality pre-school education for 2 year olds to school starters. It is staffed by a dedicated and hardworking team who provide a calm, secure and stimulating learning environment in which children can explore and learn through play.

From September they will be introducing a new Monday – Friday timetable. Many local residents went to Haywood Road Preschool themselves so hopefully they’ll be here for at least another 30 years to come!

Nottingham Chan Meditation Group

New at Haywood Road Community Centre is Nottingham Chan Meditation Group.

Nottingham Chan is an affiliated group of the Western Chan Fellowship. We are a group of mixed experience, welcoming new members at any level. We meet on two Tuesday evenings in a month for sitting and walking meditation and discussion.

The key practice of the group is Chan – Chinese Zen Buddhism, as practiced by the Western Chan Fellowship. Foremost we are an open group, and there is no need to be a Buddhist. If you would like to meditate with us you are always welcome.

Meetings are held at the Haywood Road Community Centre on the first and the third Tuesday of each month, starting at 19:00 and finishing at 21:30.

The first Tuesday meeting in the month is also more specific to beginners or those new to a meditation practice. We begin meditation at 19:30, so please do arrive in good time, especially if it’s your first time at the group, to allow time for questions or specific practice demonstration.

If you have your own meditation mat, cushion or meditation bench, we recommended that you bring it, as our group equipment is currently limited. Chairs are available.

The Great Get Together

The Great Get Together in Honour of Jo Cox

On Saturday 17th June we held our first major event at Haywood Road Community Centre and Bowling Green. As the temperature soared towards 30°C crowds of picnickers settled under the trees at the north end of the old bowling green enjoying the sunshine, views and the green space. Meanwhile more crowds browsed the stalls set up on the green from the PDSA, Haywood Road Pre-School, The Hollies Nursery, Shake the Spirit Cocktails and loads of others.

A superb soundtrack was provided by DJ Hemulen Soundz with dancing displays and a Zumba class from Studio 3 Dance and Fitness Centre as well as a Tai Chi class from Turtle Lodge Healing. Councillor Muriel Weisz planted a red rose to commemorate Jo Cox while tea, coffee and refreshments were served in the shade of Haywood Road Community Centre.

The event was such a success and a real display of what can be achieved when communities get together, if you are up for helping out with future events like this please get in touch via our Facebook page click here or email us on

Below are some photos from the day.

Sunset Cinema

Sunset Cinema Club

On Friday 16th June and Saturday 17th June Sunset Cinema Club hosted Screen on the Green. This involved a huge outdoor cinema screen on the Old Bowling Green along with full sound system showing ‘The Princess Bride’ on the Friday night and ‘Grease’ on the Saturday night. Both evenings were a massive success with superb feedback from everybody who went.

Porchester Festival

Porchester Festival is a weekend of fun for all residents of Porchester ward, an area which encompasses all of Porchester Gardens and stretches as far as Mapperley golf course.
It is volunteer run and many events are free. It aims to celebrate the wonderful schools, organisations, businesses, churches and community groups that make this such a special part of Mapperley.
We hope this festival will help foster a sense of community and becomes a popular summer event in the years to come.
Porchester Community Festival is a non profit organisation and any excess funds from organising the Festival are put back into the community.
This year we’re putting any excess funds raised into Haywood Road Community Centre.
