Silent Disco 2

On Saturday June 30th, we held our second Silent Disco on Haywood Road Green and it was a huge success. The event completely sold out and over a hundred young and old ravers strutted their stuff until midnight. Many thanks to all the DJs and volunteers who made it happen and it WILL be an annual event – next time, we are planning for an even bigger crowd! Photos below…

Meditation and Relaxation

The Peaceful Me meditation and relaxation courses at Haywood Road Community Centre are extremely popular and have been running since September 2017.

The next set of groups starts on May 17th providing the perfect opportunity to unwind and relax after the stress and hecticness of daily life.

Times are 6.40pm-7.40pm and 8pm-9pm weekly on Thursdays from 17th May.

Art Exhibition

Haywood Road Community Centre hosted a very successful art exhibition over the weekend of September 9th and 10th, which featured over 120 paintings and drawings by 19 different artists.

All the art works on display were produced by members of the Mapperley Artists Group, which meets every week at the centre on Thursday afternoons between 1.30pm and 4pm. New members are always welcome.

We hope the exhibition will become an annual event. Scroll down for photos…

Yoga at Haywood Road

Start something new this September.

If you’re curious about trying out yoga or simply keen to perfect your downward dog, then join me at my first class on Tuesday 5 September at Haywood Road Community Centre.

As a special offer, this launch class is just £5*

This class is suitable for everyone – whether you’re new or old to yoga. My aim is to create an inclusive environment where everyone can develop their personal practice of yoga and enjoy the benefits at their own speed.

Email me if you have any questions or want to know more about the class or indeed me: clare@makinyoga.com

You can expect a gentle and flowing practice to balance your body and mind. There will be lots of modifications and challenges for every level of yogi.

This is a great opportunity to spend an hour focusing on YOU! – relaxing and building your inner strength for a better approach to life.

No experience of yoga is required and regular yogis are also very welcome.

*Regular investment cost:

Drop in £7 per week or buy a 4 week class pass for £24 and save £4. (4 week class passes can be used over a 6 week period from the date of the first lesson attended).

What a Weekend!

On Friday 11th August Sunset Cinema returned to Haywood Road with Screen on the Green.

To coincide with the Perseid meteor shower they showed a special screening of Close Encounters of the Third Kind.

On top of this we had Nottingham Astronomical Society who set up three telescopes on the green (viewing Saturn was amazing – you could see the rings AND several of its moons!).

Saturday 12th August saw a screening of the 1987 classic Dirty Dancing, and prior to the film we also had a superb live dance display from Studio 3, Mapperley!

Both nights were a huge success and a great addition to the summer of activities and events we’ve had on the Old Bowling Green.

Not content with this, during the daytime of Saturday 12th August Haywood Road Community Centre hosted a national Scrabble tournament which attracted players from all over the country!

Outdoor Silent Disco

On Friday 15th September 6pm – 11pm Haywood Road Community Centre hosts its first Silent Disco under a marquee on Haywood Road Green.

If you’ve never been to one of these before you’re in for a real treat and a unique experience.

Everybody gets a set of wireless headphones and dances under the disco lights. However unlike a normal disco, there are at least two DJ sets being played at the same time, so if you fancy a change of tune, you flick a switch on your headphones and listen to an alternative set.

You can tell which set people are listening to by the way they are dancing. We’ve also got a licenced bar as well as hot food so should be a cracking evening with no moaning from the neighbours!

All proceeds go towards saving Haywood Road Green from being built on so we can save the last patch of green space in Porchester Gardens.

Legendary Outdoor Silent Disco, under cover and under lights. Choose your tracks and dance the night away!

Choice of songs – Disco, Indie, Old Skool, Rave, Pop, Rock, Reggae – for all ages and tastes.

Under Marquee cover – Fun, Dancing & Laughter!

Licenced Bar, Hot Food & Snacks.

Mapperley Scrabble Club

Mapperley Scrabble Club was founded over 30 years ago. It is currently the largest club in Nottinghamshire with around 30 members. While most members live in or near Nottingham, some travel from as far afield as Derby and Melton Mowbray. New players are always welcome, whatever their level of play.

Meetings are every Thursday evening of the year, except for a one or two week break at Christmas.Doors open at 6.30pm and members are asked to be at the club by 6.45pm if possible.  To be sure of being included in the games for the evening, you must arrive by 6.50pm at the absolute latest.

Three games are played, the first starting at 7.00pm and games 2 and 3 starting no later than 7.55pm and 8.50pm respectively.  Most people find they have finished their third game by 9.30pm but you should allow for the final game lasting up to 9.45pm.

Haywood Road Preschool

Haywood Road Preschool has been running successfully at Haywood Road Community Centre for over 30 years.

It provides high quality pre-school education for 2 year olds to school starters. It is staffed by a dedicated and hardworking team who provide a calm, secure and stimulating learning environment in which children can explore and learn through play.

From September they will be introducing a new Monday – Friday timetable. Many local residents went to Haywood Road Preschool themselves so hopefully they’ll be here for at least another 30 years to come!

Nottingham Chan Meditation Group

New at Haywood Road Community Centre is Nottingham Chan Meditation Group.

Nottingham Chan is an affiliated group of the Western Chan Fellowship. We are a group of mixed experience, welcoming new members at any level. We meet on two Tuesday evenings in a month for sitting and walking meditation and discussion.

The key practice of the group is Chan – Chinese Zen Buddhism, as practiced by the Western Chan Fellowship. Foremost we are an open group, and there is no need to be a Buddhist. If you would like to meditate with us you are always welcome.

Meetings are held at the Haywood Road Community Centre on the first and the third Tuesday of each month, starting at 19:00 and finishing at 21:30.

The first Tuesday meeting in the month is also more specific to beginners or those new to a meditation practice. We begin meditation at 19:30, so please do arrive in good time, especially if it’s your first time at the group, to allow time for questions or specific practice demonstration.

If you have your own meditation mat, cushion or meditation bench, we recommended that you bring it, as our group equipment is currently limited. Chairs are available.

The Great Get Together

The Great Get Together in Honour of Jo Cox

On Saturday 17th June we held our first major event at Haywood Road Community Centre and Bowling Green. As the temperature soared towards 30°C crowds of picnickers settled under the trees at the north end of the old bowling green enjoying the sunshine, views and the green space. Meanwhile more crowds browsed the stalls set up on the green from the PDSA, Haywood Road Pre-School, The Hollies Nursery, Shake the Spirit Cocktails and loads of others.

A superb soundtrack was provided by DJ Hemulen Soundz with dancing displays and a Zumba class from Studio 3 Dance and Fitness Centre as well as a Tai Chi class from Turtle Lodge Healing. Councillor Muriel Weisz planted a red rose to commemorate Jo Cox while tea, coffee and refreshments were served in the shade of Haywood Road Community Centre.

The event was such a success and a real display of what can be achieved when communities get together, if you are up for helping out with future events like this please get in touch via our Facebook page click here or email us on enquiries@haywoodroad.uk

Below are some photos from the day.
